8. Are
there are any other measures that the Government is contemplating to
effectively safeguard the domestic industry?
In the
context of removal of QRs on imports, we have to be more alert. The
Government is fully alive to this, particularly the need for an institutional
mechanism which will study, analyse and recommend appropriate duty structure
to maintain a balance between the interests of producers and the interests
of consumers and users. Therefore, in addition to all the other measures,
the Government is proposing to strengthen the Tariff Commission so that
it can play the role of an independent expert body to advise in these
matters. Given all the mechanisms in place to take care of our domestic
concerns, the Government is confident that the removal of QRs will not
hurt the Indian industry and the doubts and the apprehensions expressed
in some quarters about it are not well-founded and are exaggerated and
unwarranted.
